aiyo, we plan to take a tour there ... go up by coach in the morning, come back by river cruise in the afternoon ... apparently all tours to Ayutthaya run at the same time.
If you can stay overnight, it would give you more time to explore Ayutthaya. If not, you can still enjoy the main ruins and catch the Loy Krathong festivities around Bangkok as the Ayutthaya World Heritage Site celebrations only take place in Dec. The river cruise sounds lovely :)

Ayutthaya is most magical when experienced at sunset or sunrise :)
